Guitar Weight

For the 59 classical guitars in the Urlik collection (excluding the Torres and flamenco guitars), the average weight of a guitar including strings is 1466 grams (a little over 3 pounds).  The heaviest guitar is the Greg Smallman guitar weighing in at 2240 grams (nearly 5 pounds).  The lightest is from Casa Gonzalez at just 1070 grams (2.4 pounds).

The four Torres guitars in the Urlik collection all weigh in at less than the average for the other 59 classical guitars in the collection.  The earliest from the first epoch, FE 24, weighs 1319 grams (2.9 pounds).  A simply constructed early second epoch guitar, SE 54, weighs just 950 grams (2.1 pounds).  Two later second epoch instruments, SE 114 and SE 129, weigh 1426 grams (3.1 pounds) and 1150 grams (2.5 pounds) respectively.

Weights for the both the Torres and non-Torres guitars are depicted in the figure below in order of construction date.  While the correlation is poor, there is an apparent trend to heavier instruments over time.  The Smallman guitar is noted.  The two most recent guitars from the Urlik collection are below the trend line.  These are by Jeffrey Elliott and Federico Sheppard.  The Sheppard guitar is actually a reproduction of a Sanfeliu guitar built in 1930 and used by Augustin Barrios Mangore.

Guitar Weight with Strings for Torres and Non-Torres Classical Guitars from the Urlik Collection

The four Torres guitars from the Urlik collection can be seen at the left of the graph.  A key feature of Torres design was light weight.  The top was very thin in the central section supported by the braced arching.  The sides were also very thin.

In his catalogue, Romanillos does not provide weights for all Torres guitars.  However, the weight is provided for 28 instruments.  These are depicted in the graph below in relation to lower bout width which is used as an indicator of overall guitar size.  Seven of these instruments have a Tornavoz and one is an eleven string guitar.

Guitar Weight for Torres Guitars in the Romanillos Catalogue vs. Lower Bout Width

If the guitars with Tornavoz, the guitar with the paper maiche back and sides, and the smaller instruments are eliminated, the average weight is just 1198 grams (about 2.6 pounds) with average lower body width of 350 mm.
